Short answer: Google Ads has a new account-level setting called Automated promotions. Google reads offers on your website (for example “Flat 15% off Diwali packages”) and adds them to your ads as promotions. It applies to Search and Performance Max campaigns that have location assets and no promotion assets of their own. Industry coverage reports it starts on 12 October 2026 and is switched on by default. To turn it off: Campaigns → Assets → ⋮ More → Account-level automated assets → ⋮ → Advanced settings → Automated promotions → Off.
If you have Diwali offers on your website right now, check this setting today. Last updated: 10 October 2026.
What are Google Ads automated promotions?
According to Google Ads Help, automated promotions are offers Google identifies on your landing pages and shows in your ads, for example “20% off on black sweaters”. Google says it checks that a promotion is active and not expired. Each automated promotion can serve for less than 24 hours at a time and is re-enabled if it is still visible on your site.
Coverage by Search Engine Roundtable and PPC Land reports that Google is enabling it for eligible accounts from 12 October 2026, so you need to opt out if you don’t want it.
Which campaigns are affected?
| Campaign | Affected? |
|---|---|
| Search campaigns with location assets (linked Google Business Profile) | Yes |
| Performance Max campaigns with location assets, including Local campaigns | Yes |
| Campaigns that already have your own promotion assets | No. Google skips them. |
| Search or PMax campaigns without location assets | No (for now) |
| Meta (Facebook/Instagram) ads | No. This is a Google Ads feature. |
In India this mainly affects businesses with a physical location linked to their ads: travel agencies, clinics, real estate offices, coaching institutes, salons, restaurants and showrooms.
Why it matters during Diwali
Festive offers change fast and often come with conditions: “valid on bookings above ₹50,000”, “first 20 customers”, “till Dhanteras”. Automated extraction can miss the conditions, show an offer that has ended, or pick a deal from one page and attach it to an ad for a different service. That can lead to:
- Angry callers who saw an offer you can’t honour
- Wasted clicks from people chasing a discount that no longer applies
- Compliance risk in healthcare, finance and education, where offer wording often needs approval
If you’re running festive campaigns, our 4-week Diwali ads plan covers the rest of the setup.
Should you keep it on or switch it off?
| Your situation | Our advice |
|---|---|
| One simple, site-wide offer with no conditions | Can keep it on, but check the Assets report weekly |
| Several offers, packages or conditions (most travel and real estate businesses) | Switch off and add your own promotion assets |
| Healthcare, finance, education or other regulated claims | Switch off |
| Offers that change daily or expire within hours | Switch off |
| No offers on your website at all | Little effect, but switching off removes the risk |
How to switch off automated promotions (step by step)
- Sign in to Google Ads and open Campaigns → Assets.
- In the filter bar, click the ⋮ More icon and choose Account-level automated assets.
- Click the ⋮ icon, then Advanced settings.
- Find Automated promotions, choose Off and save. Give a reason if asked.
To see what Google has already added: go to Campaigns → Assets, filter Asset type: Promotion, and look for “Google AI” in the Added by column. Hover over it to see where the offer was taken from.
The better option: write your own promotion assets
Manual promotion assets give you control and stop Google adding automated ones to that campaign. A good festive promotion asset has:
- A clear occasion: Diwali (Google offers occasion options in the promotion asset)
- The exact discount: a percentage or rupee amount, with minimum order if any
- Start and end dates: so it stops on time, for example after Bhai Dooj
- The right final URL: the page that explains the offer and its terms
Then make sure the landing page states the same offer and conditions in plain text. That’s also what Google’s AI features read. See our guide to getting recommended in Google AI Mode.
Is this part of a bigger trend?
Yes. Google and Meta are both automating more of the ad: assets, offers, targeting and budgets. Automation works well when your inputs are accurate and badly when they’re messy. Frequently asked questions
What are automated promotions in Google Ads?
Automated promotions are offers that Google identifies on your website and shows in your ads. They apply to Search and Performance Max campaigns with location assets that don’t already have manual promotion assets.
How do I turn off automated promotions in Google Ads?
Go to Campaigns, then Assets, click the More icon in the filter bar, choose Account-level automated assets, click the three-dot icon, open Advanced settings, and set Automated promotions to Off.
When do Google Ads automated promotions start?
Industry coverage reports that Google enables the feature for eligible accounts from 12 October 2026. Check the Account-level automated assets settings in your own account to see its status.
Will automated promotions show expired offers?
Google says it checks that promotions are active and not expired, and each automated promotion serves for less than 24 hours before being rechecked. Offers with conditions or very short validity can still be risky, so many businesses prefer manual promotion assets.
