Google AI Mode in India: how to get your business recommended (and what AI Mode ads mean)

Google says no special trick is needed to appear in AI Mode or AI Overviews. What it officially recommends, a 12-step checklist for Indian businesses, and what the new ads inside AI answers mean.

Google AI Mode in India: how to get your business recommended (and what AI Mode ads mean)

Short answer: Google says there is no special trick, file or schema needed to appear in AI Mode or AI Overviews. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and then normal SEO best practices decide whether it gets cited. What changes is how Google picks sources. AI Mode runs many related searches at once (Google calls it “query fan-out”) and pulls from more pages than a classic results page. Businesses with clear, specific, well-structured answers and a complete Google Business Profile get picked more often. Ads are moving into these AI answers too, so paid and organic now compete inside the same response.

This guide covers what Google has actually said, a 12-step checklist for Indian businesses, and what the new AI Mode ad formats mean for your budget. Last updated: 10 October 2026.

What is Google AI Mode, and how is it different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the AI summaries that appear above normal results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search tab for harder questions where people want to compare options, reason through trade-offs and ask follow-ups. Google describes AI Mode as most helpful for queries “where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed” (Google Search Central).

AI Overviews AI Mode
Where it appears Above classic results, only when Google decides it adds value A dedicated AI tab and follow-up conversation
Best for Getting the gist of a question quickly Comparisons, planning, “which is best for me” questions
How sources are chosen Supporting pages found while generating the answer Query fan-out: many sub-searches, so a wider and more varied set of links
Same links as each other? Not necessarily. Google says the two may use different models and techniques.

For a business, AI Mode matters most for buying questions such as “best travel agency in Chandigarh for a Bali honeymoon”, “which coaching institute in Mohali has weekend batches”, or “how much do Meta ads cost for a real estate project”. Those are exactly the comparison queries AI Mode is designed for.

What does Google officially say you need to do?

Google’s guidance for site owners is clear on a few points (AI features and your website):

  • No special optimisation is required. In Google’s words, there are no additional requirements or “special optimizations necessary”. No AI text file, no new markup, and “no special schema.org structured data” is needed.
  • Be indexable and snippet-eligible. If a page can’t appear in normal Search with a snippet, it can’t be used in AI features.
  • Structured data must match the page. Google advises “making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page”.
  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and at your hosting or CDN level. Some security settings block Googlebot without you knowing.
  • Keep important content in text, support it with good images and video, and keep your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center details up to date.
  • Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in Search Console under the normal “Web” search type. There is no separate report.

So “AEO” is not a new technical layer. It’s SEO done properly, plus writing your pages so a machine can lift a clear, trustworthy answer from them. We cover the writing side in our AEO guide for Indian businesses.

Why some businesses get named in AI Mode and others don’t

Because AI Mode fans a question out into many sub-searches, it rewards sites that answer the sub-questions well, not just the headline keyword. For “best travel agency for a Kerala family trip”, the fan-out might look up prices, itinerary length, reviews, location, WhatsApp response and cancellation policy. The businesses that get mentioned tend to have:

  1. Specific facts on the page: real prices or price ranges, durations, locations served, inclusions. Vague pages give the AI nothing to quote.
  2. One page per real question. A page titled “Kerala family packages from Delhi: 5 and 7-night prices” beats a generic “Our Packages” page.
  3. Consistent business details everywhere: the same name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Justdial and directories.
  4. Reviews that mention specifics, such as “they replied on WhatsApp within minutes and sorted our hotel change”. These help both Google Maps and AI answers.
  5. Clear authorship and evidence: who wrote it, what data it’s based on, when it was updated.

The 12-step AI Mode checklist for Indian businesses

  1. Check indexing. In Search Console, use URL Inspection on your top 10 pages and make sure each is indexed.
  2. Check your CDN and firewall. If you use Cloudflare or a security plugin, confirm Googlebot is not challenged or blocked.
  3. Don’t over-restrict snippets. Avoid nosnippet or very low max-snippet values on pages you want cited.
  4. Answer first. Start key pages with a two- or three-sentence direct answer that contains a number, a place or a clear recommendation.
  5. Use question-style headings that match how people ask (“How much does…”, “Which is better…”, “How long does…”).
  6. Publish your prices or price ranges. AI Mode comparison answers lean on concrete numbers. Our services page does this deliberately.
  7. Add FAQs that match the visible content, with FAQ markup only for questions actually shown on the page.
  8. Complete your Google Business Profile: categories, services with prices, photos, opening hours, and replies to every review.
  9. Match your name, address and phone across the website, Business Profile and directories.
  10. Show who is behind the content: author name and role, an “about the data” note, and a “last updated” date.
  11. Link related pages together so Google can find the supporting answers during fan-out. For example, link a cost guide to the service page and to a case study.
  12. Measure in Search Console: watch impressions and clicks for long, conversational queries. That’s where AI Mode traffic tends to show up.

Ads inside AI Mode: what changed in 2026

At Google Marketing Live 2026, Google introduced new ad formats that appear inside AI Mode answers, according to coverage by yellowHEAD and Adthena:

  • Conversational ads that appear as part of the answer to a specific question.
  • Highlighted answers, where an eligible ad appears as a recommendation inside list-style AI responses.
  • AI-powered shopping ads that explain a product for the specific query.
  • Lead-generation ads with a business agent, where the user chats with an AI trained on the advertiser’s site instead of filling a form.

Industry coverage also reports that Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns using broad match or AI Max can already be eligible to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Availability by country is still rolling out, and we have not seen official confirmation of every format being live for Indian advertisers. Check your Google Ads account notifications before planning around them.

What Indian advertisers should do now

  • Feed the machine good inputs: clear landing pages, accurate prices and strong assets. AI ad formats build answers from your site and feed.
  • Track bookings, not just clicks. AI placements can bring more conversational, higher-intent leads, or more junk. Only your CRM tells you which. See cost per lead vs cost per booking.
  • Be ready to reply instantly. Conversational ads raise expectations. If someone chats with an AI agent and then waits six hours for your team, you lose them. Our WhatsApp follow-up playbook covers the first reply.
  • Keep a share of budget on Meta. Discovery on Instagram and Facebook still feeds the searches people later make in AI Mode. Benchmarks are in our Meta ads cost guide.

Is SEO dead because of AI Mode?

No, but it is changing shape. Google says AI Overviews appear only when they add value beyond classic results, so many searches still show normal results. Google also says clicks from AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with users spending more time on the site. The pages that lose are thin, generic articles. The pages that win answer a specific question with specific evidence, from a business people can trust. That’s good news for local, specialist businesses that actually know their numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business to appear in Google AI Mode?

Make sure your pages are indexed and eligible for snippets, then follow normal SEO best practices: answer specific questions clearly near the top of the page, publish concrete details like prices and locations, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and link related pages together. Google says no special markup or AI file is required.

Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?

No. Google’s Search Central guidance says there is no special schema.org structured data or new machine-readable file required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Any structured data you do use should match the visible text on the page.

How can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Search Console Performance report under the “Web” search type. There is no separate AI report, so watch impressions and clicks for longer, conversational queries.

Are ads shown inside Google AI Mode in India?

Google announced new AI Mode ad formats at Google Marketing Live 2026, and industry coverage reports that some Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible for AI placements. Availability is rolling out by country, so Indian advertisers should check their Google Ads account for which formats are live.

Is AEO different from SEO?

Answer engine optimisation is SEO focused on being quoted in AI answers. It uses the same foundations (indexable pages, helpful content, trust) with extra emphasis on direct answers, specific facts, question-style headings and consistent business information across the web.
