Short answer: From 28 October 2026, Meta will switch on “product browsing” for ads that are already running on Facebook and Instagram, unless you opt out first. When it is on, a person who taps your ad may first see a page inside Facebook or Instagram with product details and suggestions, instead of going straight to your website. If you sell products from a catalogue, it is worth testing. If you run lead generation for travel, real estate, education or healthcare, we recommend switching it off and keeping your clicks going to your landing page, lead form or WhatsApp.

What did Meta announce?
Around 14 October 2026, advertisers started getting a notice in Meta Ads Manager. It says that starting 28 October 2026, Meta will add product browsing to your existing ads. Until now this was an optional Advantage+ creative enhancement that you had to switch on yourself. The change is the default: for ads that are already live, it moves from off to on.
The notice includes an “Opt out” button and says you can also turn the feature on or off per ad at any time. It backs the change with one number: in a Meta experiment run from 6 to 21 August 2026 across about 117,700 advertisers, businesses saw 3% more conversions on average with in-app product browsing.
What does product browsing do to your ad?
Normally, when someone taps your ad, they land on the page you chose: your website, a lead form, WhatsApp or Instagram Direct. With product browsing on, the person “may see an experience on Facebook or Instagram with product info and personalised suggestions” before they reach your site.
In simple words, Meta builds a mini shopping page inside its own app, using your product information, and shows it first. The person can still go to your website from there. But some people will browse, compare and leave without ever visiting you.
| Question | What we know |
|---|---|
| Start date | 28 October 2026, for existing ads |
| Platforms | Facebook and Instagram |
| Default | On, unless you opt out |
| Meta’s claim | 3% more conversions on average (test of about 117,700 advertisers, 6–21 Aug 2026) |
| Opt-out options | “Opt out” button in the notice before 28 Oct, or a per-ad setting at any time |
| Not yet clear | Which placements and objectives; whether new ads also default to on; whether a catalogue is needed |
Should you opt out?
It depends on what you sell. Meta’s test covered e-commerce, consumer goods and retail. Those are businesses with a product catalogue, where browsing more products inside the app can lead to more sales. Most of the businesses we work with sell something different: a holiday package, a flat, a course seat or a doctor’s appointment. For them, the next step after the ad is a conversation, not a cart.
Opt out if you:
- Run lead generation for travel, real estate, education, healthcare or services
- Send people to a landing page built for one offer, with your price, proof and a form
- Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads or lead forms, where a quick reply is the whole point
- Are running a landing page A/B test right now and need clean traffic
- Judge campaigns by cost per booking in your own CRM, not by Meta-reported conversions
Test it if you:
- Sell physical products online with a Meta catalogue connected
- Have many products and people often browse before they buy
- Track sales in Shopify, WooCommerce or GA4, so you can check Meta’s numbers against your own
How to opt out of product browsing
There are two ways. Do the first one before 28 October, and use the second one to check each ad afterwards.
Option 1: Use the “Opt out” button in the notice
- Open Meta Ads Manager and look for the notice about product browsing (it may appear as a banner or in your notifications).
- Click Opt out. Advertisers have reported that it shows which ad account the choice applies to.
- If you manage several ad accounts or clients, repeat this in each one. The notice does not say whether one click covers all accounts in a business portfolio.
Option 2: Switch it off per ad
- Open the campaign, then the ad set, then the ad.
- Go to the ad’s Advantage+ creative enhancements and destination settings.
- Find product browsing and switch it off.
- Publish the change. Repeat for every live ad you want to protect.

How to check whether it is hurting your results
Whether you opt out or test it, compare Meta’s numbers with your own. If product browsing keeps people inside Meta’s apps, Ads Manager may still show clicks while your website sees fewer visitors.
- Tag every ad link with UTM parameters, for example
utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=your-campaign. - Compare link clicks with sessions. Each week, compare link clicks in Ads Manager with sessions from Facebook and Instagram in GA4. A sudden new gap after 28 October is a warning sign.
- Watch your real outcome: enquiries, WhatsApp chats, bookings or sales in your CRM or store. A 3% rise in Meta-reported conversions means little if bookings fall.
- Test fairly. If you want to try product browsing, run the same ad with it on and off for two weeks and compare cost per sale, not just clicks.
Why Meta is doing this
This is part of a wider push. Meta is automating more of the ad journey inside its own apps, from AI-built campaigns to in-app checkout. We covered the bigger picture in Meta wants to run your ads with just a budget. Automation can help, but defaults are set for Meta’s average advertiser, not for your business. With festive season budgets running, it is worth a 10-minute check.
Frequently asked questions
What is Meta product browsing?
It is an Advantage+ creative feature. When someone taps your Facebook or Instagram ad, they may first see an in-app page with your product information and personalised suggestions before they reach your website.
When does product browsing turn on automatically?
Meta’s notice says it will be added to existing ads from 28 October 2026, unless you opt out before that date.
Can I turn product browsing off after 28 October?
Yes. The notice says you can turn it on or off for each ad at any time in the ad’s Advantage+ creative and destination settings.
Does product browsing affect lead generation ads?
Meta has not listed which objectives are included. Its test covered e-commerce, consumer goods and retail. If your ads drive enquiries, check each ad and switch the setting off if it appears.
Will opting out hurt my ad performance?
Not in any way Meta has stated. Opting out keeps your ads working as they do today, with clicks going to the destination you chose.
