How to get more Google reviews for your business (ethically): 7 ways + WhatsApp templates

How to get more Google reviews for your business (ethically): 7 ways + WhatsApp templates

Short answer: To get more Google reviews, ask every customer at the moment they’re happiest, make it one tap with your review link or QR code, and follow up once on WhatsApp. What you must not do: offer discounts or gifts for reviews, ask only happy customers (“review gating”), discourage negative reviews, or have staff review your own business. Google prohibits all of these and can remove reviews or restrict your profile. More genuine reviews help you rank in Google Maps and get mentioned in AI answers.

Below: 7 ethical methods that work for Indian businesses, copy-ready WhatsApp templates, and how to reply to reviews. Last updated: 10 October 2026.

Why Google reviews matter more in 2026

  • Local rankings: reviews are one of the visible trust signals on your Google Business Profile, alongside how complete and active your profile is.
  • AI answers: when someone asks Google AI Mode or ChatGPT “best travel agency in Mohali” or “good dentist near Sector 70”, the answer draws on what customers say about businesses. Specific reviews (“they replied on WhatsApp in 5 minutes and sorted our hotel change”) give AI tools something concrete to quote. See our Google AI Mode guide.
  • Conversions: people compare star ratings and recent reviews before they call. A business with 120 recent reviews usually beats one with 8 old ones.

What Google allows, and what it bans

Google’s Maps content policy and Business Profile review tips are clear:

โœ… Allowed โŒ Not allowed
Asking all customers for an honest review Offering discounts, gifts or cashback for reviews
Sharing your review link or QR code Asking only happy customers (“review gating”)
Reminding customers once by WhatsApp, SMS or email Discouraging or blocking negative reviews
Replying to every review, good and bad Reviews from employees, owners or family (conflict of interest)
Asking customers to mention what they used Buying reviews or using review-exchange groups

Google treats incentivised reviews as fake and misleading content. Breaking these rules can get reviews removed and your profile restricted, which costs far more than it gains.

7 ethical ways to get more Google reviews

1. Ask at the “happy moment”

The best time is right after the value is delivered: the trip ends, keys are handed over, the treatment goes well, the batch results come out. Build the request into that step so nobody has to remember.

2. Make it one tap with your review link

In your Google Business Profile, use Ask for reviews to get your short review link. Save it as a quick reply in WhatsApp Business so any team member can send it in two seconds.

3. Put a QR code where customers wait

A small standee at your reception, on invoices, on the back of visiting cards, or on the itinerary PDF. “Scan to review us on Google, it takes 30 seconds.”

4. Send one WhatsApp request, and one reminder

WhatsApp gets read in India. Use the templates below. Send one request and at most one polite reminder. More than that annoys people. If you use the WhatsApp Business API, note that message charges changed on 1 October 2026.

5. Ask them to mention specifics

“If you can, mention which package or service you took.” Specific reviews help other customers, Google’s understanding of your services and AI answers. Just don’t script the review or tell people what rating to give.

6. Ask everyone, not just fans

Asking all customers is the rule, and it also makes your reviews look natural. A few honest 4-star reviews with good replies build more trust than a wall of identical 5-stars.

7. Make it a team habit, and track it

Add “review requested” as a stage in your CRM or sheet, and review the count weekly. What gets measured gets done. Our CRM guide shows how to set up stages.

Copy-ready WhatsApp review request templates

After a trip or service (send within 24 hours):
Hi [Name], thank you for choosing [Business]! ๐Ÿ™ We hope you enjoyed [the trip / your visit]. If you have 30 seconds, an honest Google review would really help other families find us: [review link]. Thank you!

Gentle reminder (3โ€“4 days later, once only):
Hi [Name], just a gentle reminder. If you get a moment, we’d love your honest feedback on Google: [review link]. It helps a small business like ours a lot. ๐Ÿ˜Š

For B2B clients:
Hi [Name], thanks again for working with us on [project]. If you’re happy to share your experience, a short Google review would mean a lot: [review link]. Totally fine if you’d prefer not to.

How to reply to reviews (including bad ones)

  • Reply to every review, ideally within 2โ€“3 days. Google recommends replying to show customers their feedback matters.
  • Keep it short and specific: mention what they used. Don’t paste the same thank-you everywhere.
  • Don’t promote offers in replies. Google advises against using replies for deals.
  • For negative reviews: stay calm, apologise where appropriate, explain briefly, and invite them to contact you privately to resolve it. Future customers read your reply as much as the complaint.
  • Never argue or reveal private details about a customer.

Bonus: complete your Google Business Profile

Reviews work best on a complete profile: correct categories, services with prices, photos, opening hours, and the same name, address and phone number as your website. Our AEO guide explains how this helps you get named in AI answers too.
