How to get your business named in ChatGPT and Google AI answers: an AEO guide for Indian businesses

Customers now ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity who to hire. Here's what answer engine optimisation (AEO) is, how AI tools pick which businesses to mention, and a 10-step checklist to get yours cited.

How to get your business named in ChatGPT and Google AI answers: an AEO guide for Indian businesses

Short answer: Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of making your business the one AI tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and Perplexity quote or recommend when someone asks a question. They favour pages that answer the question directly, show real expertise and data, are easy to crawl, and are backed up by other trustworthy sites.

A year ago, a travel agency owner in Ludhiana looking for a marketing agency would type “digital marketing agency for travel” into Google and scroll through ten blue links. Today, many ask an AI assistant instead: “Which agency can run Facebook ads and WhatsApp follow-up for my travel business?” The assistant replies with a short paragraph and a few names. If yours isn’t one of them, you were never in the running.

This guide explains how that answer gets built, and what you can do this month to appear in it.

What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) aims to rank your pages in the list of results. AEO aims to get your content used in the answer itself, the summary that appears above or instead of that list.

SEO AEO
Goal Rank a page in the results Be quoted or recommended in the AI answer
Where it shows Google’s list of links Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot
What wins Relevance, links, page experience Clear direct answers, original facts, trust signals across the web
How you measure it Rankings and clicks Mentions and citations in AI answers, plus branded searches

The good news: they are not rivals. Almost everything that helps AEO also helps normal SEO. You are not starting again; you are sharpening what you already have.

How do AI tools decide which businesses to mention?

No AI company publishes its full recipe, but the pattern is consistent across tools. When they search the web to answer a question, they tend to use sources that:

  • Answer the exact question early. A clear two or three sentence answer near the top of a page is easy to lift into a summary.
  • Contain something specific. Real prices, numbers, locations and examples are more useful to an answer than general advice anyone could write.
  • Are easy to read for machines. Clean headings, lists, tables and structured data help a model understand what a page is about.
  • Are confirmed elsewhere. When your name, services and address appear consistently on Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and other sites, AI tools are more confident recommending you.
  • Can actually be crawled. If a page is blocked, slow or hidden behind scripts, it cannot be quoted.

The 10-step AEO checklist for Indian businesses

1. Write down the questions your customers actually ask

Start with your sales calls and WhatsApp chats, not keyword tools. “How much does a Kedarnath package cost for four people?” “Do you charge for site visits?” “What is the fee for Meta ads management?” Each real question is a potential answer page or FAQ.

2. Answer first, explain second

Put a direct answer in the first two or three sentences of the page or section, then go into detail. If an AI tool only reads your opening paragraph, it should still get the right answer. We opened our guide on how much Meta ads cost in India exactly this way.

3. Use question-style headings

Headings like “How much does it cost?” or “How long does approval take?” map neatly onto what people type or say to an assistant. Keep one clear question per heading.

4. Publish something only you know

Original data is the strongest AEO asset a small business has. Your real prices, your own campaign results, the average time your team takes to reply, what customers ask most. Generic content is everywhere; your numbers are not.

5. Show prices, or at least ranges

“Contact us for pricing” gives an AI nothing to say. A published price or range lets the assistant answer the question and name you as the source. It also filters out enquiries you would never close.

6. Add FAQ and business structured data

Structured data (schema markup) labels your content in a format machines read directly: your organisation, address, services, and question-and-answer pairs. Most SEO plugins can add it. Make sure what the schema says matches what the page shows.

7. Make your Google Business Profile complete and consistent

Google’s AI features lean heavily on local information for “near me” style questions. Fill in every section, add real photos, list your services, and keep your name, address and phone number exactly the same everywhere. If you have two offices, list both properly.

8. Earn mentions beyond your own website

AI tools are more willing to recommend a business that others talk about. Genuine client reviews, listings in respected industry directories, interviews, guest articles and partner pages all count. Aim for quality over quantity.

9. Check that AI crawlers can read your site

Look at your site’s robots.txt and security settings to make sure you are not blocking the search crawlers used by Google, Bing and the major AI assistants from your public pages. Also submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, not just Google Search Console. Several AI search products draw on Bing’s index.

10. Keep pages fresh and dated

Show a “last updated” date and actually update prices, numbers and screenshots when they change. AI answers about costs and rules prefer current information, and stale pages quietly drop out.

Specific, useful guides are what AI tools quote. Two examples from our own journal: WhatsApp Business app vs API and travel CRM features that matter.

How do you know if AEO is working?

There is no single dashboard for AI visibility yet, so use a simple routine:

  1. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google the ten questions from step 1. Note whether your business or pages are mentioned or cited.
  2. Watch branded searches in Google Search Console. When AI tools mention you, more people search your name directly.
  3. Ask every new enquiry how they found you. “ChatGPT suggested you” is now a real answer, and it is worth counting.

Common AEO mistakes to avoid

  • Writing long introductions before getting to the answer.
  • Stuffing pages with keywords instead of answering clearly.
  • Publishing claims you can’t back up. Inflated numbers get repeated, and then questioned.
  • Having different addresses or phone numbers on different sites.
  • Blocking crawlers by accident with a security plugin or a copied robots.txt.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation: preparing your content so AI-powered search tools such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity can use it in their answers.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. The same foundations, useful content, a fast crawlable site and trust from other websites, help you rank in normal results and get cited in AI answers.

How long does AEO take to work?

Quick fixes such as direct answers, FAQs and schema can be picked up within weeks once pages are re-crawled. Building the wider trust that makes AI tools recommend you by name usually takes a few months of steady work.

Can a small local business appear in ChatGPT answers?

Yes. For local and specialised questions, AI tools often mention smaller businesses with clear, specific pages, consistent listings and genuine reviews. Being specific about what you do and where helps more than size.

Do I need special tools for AEO?

No. A good content plan, an SEO plugin that adds structured data, Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a monthly check of AI answers are enough to start.
